Mark J. Rebilas – USA TODAY Sports

The Packers have been wrapped up in drama since March, when it was reported that MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers is unhappy with the organization and “wants out” of Green Bay. Since then, the primary focus of nearly all NFL coverage has been about wether or not the future Hall-of-Famer will be returning to Green Bay in 2021. Tuesday June 8th marked the official start to the Packers 2021 season. Mandatory mini-camp has started and all of the players who missed OTAs were back in Green Bay, all but one. Over the past several seasons the Green Bay Packers have had the luxury of playing with not just one, but two high caliber running backs – Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams. This offseason, both backs were due for major paydays. The Packers were able to keep their superstar in town, signing Aaron Jones to a four year, 48 million dollar contract at the start of free agency this past March. Williams on the other hand, was forced to sign elsewhere and ended up going to Detroit on a two year, 6 million dollar deal. The departure of Williams sets the stage for a major increase of snaps for second year running back, A.J. Dillon, who seems to be more than ready to take on the responsibility.

Four years into the Gutekunst era it is obvious the inside linebacker position is not high on the priority list. Last season, after deciding not to invest in homegrown talent [Blake Martinez] the Packers were left with a young and inexperienced group of middle linebackers. Yes, they did bring in Christian Kirksey, who made some splash plays throughout the 2020 season. However, his inability to remain healthy coupled with the fact his biggest advocate, Mike Pettine, was let go at the end of the season, made him a cap causality coming into 2021.

Last night, on Kenny Mayne’s final episode of Sports Center, Aaron Rodgers finally broke his silence on the situation that is unfolding between him and the Green Bay Packers. Although he did not say much and we still do not have a clear cut answer as to how this is all going to unfold, his cryptic message did provide some insight to the issues going on in Titletown. One thing he made very clear is that it is way deeper than the drafting of Jordan Love.
