The Packers have been wrapped up in drama since March, when it was reported that MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers is unhappy with the organization and “wants out” of Green Bay. Since then, the primary focus of nearly all NFL coverage has been about wether or not the future Hall-of-Famer will be returning to Green Bay in 2021. The uncertainty surrounding Rodgers’ future in titletown has been a dark cloud looming over the organization all offseason, a cloud that doubled in size on Tuesday due to a cryptic tweet sent out by Packers All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams.
Although it is just a tweet, it is difficult to ignore what it may mean. Adams is entering the final year of his contract and, thanks to his on field dominance, will most likely become the highest paid receiver in football upon signing his next deal. Keeping in mind that a lot of his success is due to the uncanny connection he has with Rodgers, it is safe to assume he will have some hesitation about signing a long term deal with the Packers without a guarantee that No.12 will be under center in 2022 and beyond.
Last week, in an interview with Bleacher Report, Adams was asked about his future in Green Bay. His response confirmed the notion that Aaron Rodgers will play a large roll in his decision.
“I’m not planning on going anywhere” Adams stated. “That’s only one piece of it, though. Obviously the quarterback situation helps it, but the stars got to align across the board as far as contractually. We’ll figure all that stuff out and let it happen. I’ll be at training camp like I said regardless, we’re going to play the season, and we’ll see how all of that pans out.”
Rodgers and Adams are unarguably the top passing duo in the NFL. It would be hard to blame him for not wanting to stick around if the situation between Rodgers and the Packers does not get resolved, especially when looking at other high caliber receivers around the league.
Stefon Diggs and DeAndre Hopkins have both found major success on their new teams over the past couple of seasons, success that Adams will inevitably have available to him if he does in fact choose to leave Green Bay as a free agent in 2022.
So the plot thickens. If the Packers cannot patch things up with Rodgers and solidify him as their starter, not just for this upcoming season but for years to come, there is a good chance they will loose the best wide receiver in the NFL as well. Which would leave GM Brian Gutekunst with, not just one, but two hall-of-fame size blemishes on his already suspect legacy.
