A little over a week ago, I posted an article regarding the Packers need for veteran leadership within the inside linebacker room. On Wednesday, that need was fulfilled with the acquisition of six-year veteran, De’Vondre Campbell.
After being drafted in the fourth round by the Atlanta Falcons in 2016, De’Vondre Campbell has proven to be as consistent as they come. He has recorded no fewer than 92 tackles since the 2017 season, and his durability has allowed him to appear in all 16 regular season games in four of his five seasons in the NFL. Campbell has also accrued valuable post season experience during his years in Atlanta, playing in five career playoff games and serving as the starter for the Falcons as they made their Super Bowl run in 2016.
Campbell also has some history with head coach Matt LaFleur, who was part of the Falcons coaching staff when he was drafted in 2016. Wednesday, when asked about the impact Campbell will have on the slew of young linebackers currently on the Packers roster, Coach LaFleur had nothing but positive things to say.
“He is a big, long guy who can run. He definitely bring a different dynamic to that room in his ability to be be able to cover, wether its tight ends or backs. He’s a really versatile player,” LaFleur told the media.
“I think he’s a great person first and foremost, which I think is so important for our team. I really like the character of this group, and just the effort and energy they bring on a daily basis.”
Last season, Campbell started all 16 games for the Arizona Cardinals, logging 99 tackles (69 solo) which included seven tackles for loss and two sacks. Although he only 28 years old, he has entered the Packers locker room as the oldest player at his position, and could potentially earn himself the starting spot come week one.
Wether or not Campbell is the starter isn’t that important. Just having him on the roster adds much needed depth and veteran leadership, which will aid in the development of the promising young talent that currently makes up Green Bay’s inside linebacker group.
Last season, UFA Krys Barnes and fifth-round pick Kamal Martin both showed promise as they received the lions share of the Packers defensive snaps during their rookie years. Being able to work alongside a hardened veteran like Campbell, who has played over 4000 downs and in meaningful games throughout his career, can only help the young prospects take their level of play to new heights.
The second phase of the Packers defense was without a doubt the weakest aspect of the team last season. If Campbell can come in and establish himself, like he has done consistently over the last five years, this signing will end up paying dividends during the 2021 season as the Packers look to get over the hump and return to the Super Bowl for the first time in over a decade.
